So-called Doomsday Asteroids
Six days after publishing this article, international news outlets broadcasted reports of an asteroid exploding over Russia injuring 1500 people. Three weeks later CNN circulated eye-catching news of two comets – Pan-STARRS and ISON – that will pass by Earth this year (2013). CNN's story was entitled, somewhat sensationally, “Welcome to the year of the comet.” It concludes reassuringly, “Scientists say neither comet poses any threat to Earth ...” The fact of the matter is: scientists are worried about the possibility of a catastrophic hit from an asteroid or comet.
