WHAT IS THE BIBLE?
A short explanation for Muslims

By Samuel Green

What is the Bible?

The Bible is the holy book of the Christians. Muslims have the Qur'an (and Hadith) and Christians have the Bible. The word "Bible" is derived from the Greek word "biblia" which means "books", and Christians have been known as "the people of the book".

What is inside this book?

The Bible is not just one book but a collection of many books from many prophets. It contains the Law of Moses (Torah), the Psalms of David (Zabur), the Wisdom of Solomon, the books of the prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi and others. It has the Gospel (Injeel) of Jesus recorded by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and the writings of the apostles of Jesus. The Bible is a collection of the writings of the prophets from the time of Moses to Jesus and his apostles.

Why do Christians have all the prophets in their book?

Christians accept all the prophets and make no distinction between them, therefore they read all the prophets and seek God's guidance through all of them. What Christians believe about God comes from all of the prophets.

When the disciples of Jesus believed the Gospel they continued to read and teach from the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.

When the first people from many nations became Christians they too started to read the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms as well as the Gospel. Even today, when someone becomes a Christian they not only read the Gospel but they are taught to read all of the prophets. In Christian churches all of the prophets are publicly read and taught.

Wherever Christianity has gone it has taken the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms and encouraged people to read all of them and not just the Gospel. Christians have translated all these books into most languages so that the message of all the prophets can be known in all the world. Christians honour the prophets by reading them and not just by saying they accept them. This is a sign of true religion and fear of God.

You can read all of the prophets too!

The Law of Moses, the Prophets, the Psalms and the Gospel are all readily available today in your language. Ask a Christian for a copy or read them online.

Do not let anyone else turn you away from reading all the prophets of God.

Would you like to say this prayer?

Almighty God, thank you for speaking to us through your prophets. Please help me to listen to all that you have said through them.
