One of the four hanifs mentioned by Ibn Ishaq. The others being WARAQA B. NAUFAL, UBAYDULLAH B. JASH and ZAID B. AMR. Uthman was a relative of the prophet's first wife. He went to the Byzantine court and became a Christian. The emperor granted him a high office.
