Do English translations of the Bible prove corruption?
Normally, we at “answers to Islam” don’t bother with
replying to material on “answering-christianity”
simply because of the lack of substance and irrelevant issues presented on
particular topics. I’ve had many people contact me about how Osama Abdallah’s site can easily
be refuted on key points by any sound Christian scholar or laymen so it saves
us a lot of time in chasing irrelevant issues. Also, we aren’t out to try and
help Osama garner more attention than he deserves.
Usually when he finds that we or “answering-islam”
addresses issues on his site he tends to post article after article with
general responses and then claim that he refutes our material.
Apparently Osama Abdallah hasn’t caught onto the fact that “because you
respond to an allegation” it isn’t necessary a refutation. But there is one
article which came to our attention and it deals with the English translation
of the Bible. According to Osama Abdallah’s
material, all English translations are corrupted, etc. Actually this argument
is really a modified, albeit a little extreme, position of my own. When Osama Abdallah started debating
us years ago, he took for granted that anything said in the English
translations of the Bible were true and that they promoted contradictions and
corruptions. When he encountered many of our rebuttals exposing this fallacy
and showing that NO LANGUAGE TRANSLATION CAN COMPARE TO THE ORIGINAL he later
began changing his polemic approach.
As a Muslim Osama Abdallah will first say that, no English translation of the
Quran is as valuable as the Arabic original. However,
like many Muslims Osama Abdallah
believes that the English Bible is as good as the Hebrew and Greek text. When
embarrassed on key points, particular by Sam Shamoun.
Osama has now tried a different tactic- “The English
bibles are corrupted therefore you can’t trust what they say therefore any
Christian argument of divinity of Jesus, etc stems from the misreading of the
English bible”. As you can see, same old argument but different methodology of
polemical assault. He begins by saying:

Most
Christians recognize the New World Translation (NWT - Jehovah's Witness Bible)
for the corrupt work it is. What most Christians don't recognize is the same
corruption in their own "Christian" bibles!
Osama Abdallah is
claiming that this site proves corruption of the Bible based on all versions
not saying the same thing. First of all, this is a very stupid argument for
there are different translations which utilize different translators with a
different perspective on a particular verse. Hence, it would be impossible for
them to say the exact same thing. What is very amusing is that Osama Abdallah is appealing to
material which contradicts his very own website:

Preachers
and teachers across the world will gladly say that the Scriptures are inspired
by God – will hold their Bible high in the air and proclaim "this is God’s
word!" But do they really believe that? Almost every "fundamental" statement of faith reads that
God’s word is perfect and inspired… in the original autographs.
But
isn't that a statement of unbelief? What good is God’s word if it only exists
in manuscripts which no longer exist? Why would God inspire Scripture just to let
it wither to dust? Many modern scholars
believe that the real ending of the Gospel of Mark has been lost; that we
can not be certain how Mark concluded his Gospel. And yet these same scholars
will boldly declare belief in God’s preservation of Scripture.
Search
this matter out with a desire for the truth. For a few
minutes, set aside any notions about "the message being there," or
"translating the thought of a passage," or some idea about using one
version for study and another for devotions. Think for a while about
Christ’s words: "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that
proceedeth out of the mouth of God... Heaven and
earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away." (Mt 4:4; 24:35)
God’s
word cannot be separated from God’s words. This matters.

According to this very author, IT IS
UNBELIEF TO CLAIM THAT GOD’S WORD IS PERFECT AND INSPIRED IN ONLY THE ORIGNINAL
AUTOGRAPHS. This is exactly what Osama Abdallah is doing here by
assuming that “the English translations” are corrupted because they don’t say
the same thing. This author also talks against the claim that “Marks Gospel
ended early” or was lost, which is exactly what Osama
Abdallah also does here. How can you take him
seriously when he posts self refuting contradictory information to his very own
website? Now the author does seem to
favor the KJV so he would obviously conclude that anything not found in this
bible would be an omission or corruption. Now it isn’t our place to take any
position on this issue for it is really irrelevant. The bible wasn’t written in
English, hence if the translators translate verses
different ways, one must then turn to the original languages for a deeper
understanding. The author also lets us know that we shouldn’t turn to him as the
final authority on this issue for he isn’t a scholar in this field:

According to him, IT IS HIS BELIEF THAT THE KJV IS WITHOUT
ERROR and is God’s words in the English language. Hence the author holds to the KJV only

Why
Are There Errors in the King James Version?
You have probably heard the joke about the bigoted
Protestant fundamentalist who said, "If the King James Version was good
enough for the apostles, it is good enough for me!" People sometimes
forget that the KJV was published in 1611 A.D.
For centuries prior to 1611, Latin was the only
scholarly language in Europe. The Latin Vulgate
translation of Jerome, based upon a[n] . . .
Alexandrian Text, was the "official" text of the powerful Roman
Catholic Church.
Protestant translators sometimes did not have access
to all of the Received Greek Official Text, and being familiar with the
Vulgate, they sometimes put words into their translations based upon the Latin
which were never there in the original Greek. Schaff
points out that in about 80 places in the New Testament,
the KJV adopts Latin readings not found in the Greek. Erasmus had a corrupt,
incomplete text of Revelation to work from, and hence this book has many errors
in the KJV.
The King James translators did a marvelous job with
the materials they had. . . .
Translation Errors
Here is a partial listing of King James Version
translation errors:
Genesis 1:2 should read "And the earth became
without form . . . ." The word translated "was" is hayah, and denotes a condition different than a
former condition, as in Genesis 19:26.
Genesis 10:9 should read " .
. . Nimrod the mighty hunter in place of [in opposition to] the
LORD." The word "before" is incorrect and gives the connotation
that Nimrod was a good guy, which is false.
Leviticus 16:8, 10, 26 in the KJV is
"scapegoat" which today has the connotation of someone who is
unjustly blamed for other's sins. The Hebrew is Azazel,
which means "one removed or separated." The Azazel
goal represents Satan, who is no scapegoat. He is guilty of his part in our
sins.
Deuteronomy 24:1, "then let
him" should be "and he." As the Savior explained in Matthew 19,
Moses did not command divorcement. This statute is regulating the permission of
divorce because of the hardness of their hearts.
II Kings 2:23, should be
"young men", not "little children."
Isaiah 65:17 should be "I am creating [am about
to create] new heavens and new earth . . . ."
Ezekiel 20:25 should read
"Wherefore I permitted them, or gave them over to, [false] statutes that
are not good, and judgments whereby they should not live." God's laws are
good, perfect and right. This verse shows that since Israel rejected God's laws,
He allowed them to hurt themselves by following false man made customs and
laws.
Daniel 8:14 is correct in the
margin, which substitutes "evening morning" for "days." Too
bad William Miller didn't realize this.
Malachi 4:6 should read " .
. . lest I come and smite the earth with utter destruction."
"Curse" doesn't give the proper sense here. Same word used in Zechariah
14:11.
Matthew 5:48 should be
"Become ye therefore perfect" rather than "be ye therefore
perfect." "Perfect" here means "spiritually mature."
Sanctification is a process of overcoming with the aid of the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 24:22 needs an additional
word to clarify the meaning. It should say "there should no flesh be saved
alive."
Matthew 27:49 omits text which was
in the original. Moffatt correctly adds it, while the
RSV puts it in a footnote: "And another took a spear and pierced His side,
and out came water and blood." The Savior's death came when a soldier
pierced His side, Revelation 1:7.
Matthew 28:1, "In the end of the sabbath as it began to dawn toward the first day of the
week . . ." should be translated literally, "Now late on Sabbath, as
it was getting dusk toward the first day of the week . . . ." The Sabbath
does not end at dawn but at dusk.
Luke 2:14 should say,
"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men of God's good
pleasure or choosing." That is, there will be peace on earth among men who
have God's good will in their hearts.
Luke 14:26 has the unfortunate translation of the
Greek word miseo, Strong's #3404, as
"hate", when it should be rendered "love less by
comparison." We are not to hate our parents and family!
John 1:31, 33 should say
"baptize" or "baptizing IN water" not with water.
Pouring or sprinkling with water is not the scriptural method of baptism, but
only thorough immersion in water.
John 1:17 is another instance
of a poor preposition. "By" should be "through": "For
the law was given by [through] Moses . . . ." Moses did not proclaim his
law, but God's Law.
John 13:2 should be "And during supper"
(RSV) rather than "And supper being ended" (KJV).
Acts 12:4 has the inaccurate word
"Easter" which should be rendered "Passover." The Greek
word is pascha which is translated
correctly as Passover in Matthew 26:2, etc.
I Corinthians 1:18 should be: "For
the preaching of the cross is to them that are perishing foolishness;
but unto us which are being saved it is the power of God", rather
than "perish" and "are saved." Likewise, II
Thessalonians 2:10 should be "are
perishing" rather than "perish."
I Corinthians 15:29 should be: "Else
what shall they do which are baptized for the hope of the dead, if the
dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for
the hope of the dead?"
II Corinthians 6:2 should be "a
day of salvation", instead of "the day of salvation."
This is a quote from Isaiah 49:8, which is correct. The day of salvation
is not the same for each individual. The firstfruits
have their day of salvation during this life. The rest in the
second resurrection.
I Timothy 4:8 should say, "For
bodily exercise profiteth for a little time:
but godliness in profitable unto all things . . . ."
I Timothy 6:10 should be, "For
the love of money is a [not the] root of all evil . . . ."
Hebrews 4:8 should be "Joshua" rather than
"Jesus", although these two words are Hebrew and Greek equivalents.
Hebrews 4:9 should read, "There remaineth therefore a keeping of a sabbath
to the people of God."
Hebrews 9:28 is out of proper
order in the King James. It should be: "So Christ was once offered to bear
the sins of many; and unto them without sin that look for him shall he appear
the second time unto salvation."
I John 5:7-8 contains
additional text which was added to the original. "For there are three that
bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these
three are one. And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit,
and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one." The
italicized text was added to the original manuscripts. Most modern translations
agree that this was an uninspired addition to the Latin Vulgate to support the
unscriptural trinity doctrine.
Revelation 14:4 should be "a firstfruits",
because the 144,000 are not all the firstfruits.
Revelation 20:4-5 in the KJV is a
little confusing until you realize that the sentence "This is the first
resurrection." in verse five refers back to "they lived and reigned
with Christ a thousand years" in verse four.
Revelation 20:10, "And the devil
that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the
beast and the false prophet are [correction: should be 'were cast' because the
beast and false prophet were mortal human beings who were burned up in the lake
of fire 1,000 years previous to this time, Revelation 19:20], and shall be
tormented day and night for ever and ever." The point is that Satan will
be cast into the same lake of fire into which the beast and false
prophet were cast a thousand years previously.
Revelation 22:2 should be "health" rather
than "healing."
Italics: Sometimes Helpful, Sometimes Wrong
No language can be translated word for word into
another language. Hebrew and Greek idioms often do not come through clearly
into literal English. Thus, beginning in 1560 with the Geneva Bible,
translators initiated the practice of adding italicized clarifying words
to make the original language more plain. The
fifty-four King James translators did the same. Often, the added italicized
words do help make the meaning clearer. At other times, the translators through
their doctrinal misunderstandings added errors instead.
In Psalms 81:4, "was" is
totally uncalled for and not in the original Hebrew. New Moons are still a
statute of God.
We have shown how in Revelation 20:10 that the italicized "are" is
incorrect and that "were cast" in italics would have been more
appropriate. Another instance is John 8:28 where Jesus said
(KJV), "I am he." The "he" is in italics and was not
actually spoken by Jesus, completely obscuring the fact the Jesus was claiming
to be the great "I AM" of the Old Testament, John 8:58 and Exodus 3:14.
In Luke 3:23-38, the italicized words "the
son" are not in the original Greek. Actually,
Luke gives the fleshly descent of the Savior through Mary, while Matthew gives
the legal descent through Joseph.
Matthew 24:24 should not have the
italicized words "it were". It IS possible for the
elect to be deceived. We need to be on guard!
Romans 1:7
incorrectly has the italicized words "to be." The
fact is, Christians are now saints.
I Corinthians 7:19 needs some italicized
words to make the meaning clear. It should say: "Circumcision is
nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but [the
important thing is] the keeping of the commandments of God."
Colossians 2:16-17 can be properly
understood only if the KJV italicized word "is" in verse 17 is
left out, as it should be. The message of these verses is: don't let men
judge you as doing wrong when you observe the holy days, new moons and sabbaths; let the body of Christ
(the Church) do the judging.
I Timothy 3:11 has "their"
in italics, which is not implied in the original.
II Peter 2:5 should not have "person, a."
Noah was the eighth preacher of righteousness.
I John 2:23 has "[but] he
that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also"
in italics. This is an addition based upon the Latin text and not in the
original Greek.
Punctuation Problems
Luke 23:43 has been erroneously
used by some to claim that Jesus went straight to heaven at His death. The
original Greek did not have punctuation marks as we do today. The KJV states,
"And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee,
To day shalt thou be with me in paradise." The
comma should not be after "thee", but "day."
The believing malefactor would be with Christ in the paradise of the redeemed
when he was resurrected far into the future.
Mark 16:9 does not say that Jesus was resurrected
Sunday morning. There is a missing implied comma between "risen"
and "early" and there should be no comma after week as the KJV
has it: "Now when Jesus was risen early the first
day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene . . . ." Thus, it
should say, "Now when Jesus was risen, early the first day of the week he
appeared first to Mary Magdalene . . . ."
Word Differences
Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that the
1611 A.D. King James English is somewhat different than today's English
language. The meaning of certain words has changed, and/or the King James
sometimes uses words not familiar to most people today in their common speech.
In addition, certain idioms in the original Hebrew and Greek are a little
difficult to understand today. The Oxford Wide Margin KJV has excellent
marginal references which often explain the correct meanings. Here is a partial

There are three Greek words rendered "hell"
in the New Testament: gehenna,

the place of restraint for Satan. For English speaking people during the time
of King James, "hell" [hades] was a cellar
to store potatoes, not a lake of burning brimstone. In Acts 2:27, "hell" is hades,
meaning the grave, while in Matthew 10: 28 and Mark 9:43-48
"hell" means the lake of fire. The only place tartaroo
is used is in II Peter 2:4.

This list is irrelevant to the bible being
corrupted for one can translate any original text the different ways. Also most
of the world doesn’t even speak English so the issue of English bible
translations is nil to say the least. None of these verses, whether altered or
omitted verifies Islam or Muhammad. Hence Osama Abdallah has given us a total red herring. Here is more by

According to Osama
and Taivan, this is a contradiction. What exactly is
being contradicted here? “Such” makes no difference to the understanding of the
text. We can easily see that the issue is about “faith saving somebody”.
Apparently these two don’t know how to read too well.
NASB (1 John 3:9) No one who
is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides
in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
NKJV (1 John 3:9) Whoever has been born of God does
not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because
he has been born of God.
The same can be said here, the NASB already
gives the negative form by saying “No one” born of God “practices sin, while
the NKJV says “Whoever” is born of God “does not sin”. Hence the negative
connotation was given in the middle of the sentence. Where exactly is the
contradiction here? Both versions clearly illustrate that a person of God
doesn’t sin. “Whoever” refers to all who claim to follow God while “No one”
explicitly means that “Whoever claims to follow God can’t sin”. It says the same thing with different words! Osama is Palestinian from the Arab Middle east, and we hate to say it but we hope this isn’t the
reading with illiteracy is so high in this part of the world. I mean Osama can’t even comprehend simple reading with different
wordage. How in the world can he be a computer engineer then which is even more
complexed?
NIV (James 2:14b) 5Through
him and for his name's sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people
from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith.
6And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.
NKJV (James 2:14b) 5Through Him we have received
grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among
all nations for His name, 6among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ.
Obedience to the faith and Obedience from the
faith aren’t any major differences. Being obedient to the faith is practicing
the faith hence it is obedience which comes from faith. If you adhere to the
faith you are following its principles and therefore the NIV can be justified
by saying that “obedience comes from faith” since by faith already you are
being obedient. Even a 4th grader can understand this!
NIV (Romans 1:5-6) 5Through
him and for his name's sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people
from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith.

The same hold true above, no different. In
this case the NIV is correct for and not the NKJV since the Greek shows Jesus
being raised to life to justify us before God. We had no justification on our own
merits. Now notice how Osama abdallah
tries to explain the English translation of the Quran
here:
The answer to the second question in this article's title
is: No, Allah Almighty does not need from any man to add words so he can
clarify what GOD Almighty means.
As to the first question, to put it in the simplest terms,
it is because of the complexity of the Arabic poetry and language, that the
added words that you see in English are not needed in Arabic. These words
are added to make the English grammar look right. Arabic has different
rules of grammar than English, and believe me, they are very complex!
An Arabic word in the sentence can be placed in different
positions with different punctuations added on the top of it to literally
change the entire meaning of the

Or in other words, Arabic grammar is complex
so the translators have to add interpolations into the text of the Quran to make it conform to English. But wait, when the
translators of the Bible do the same thing or write it a different way to make
Greek Grammar, which is also very different to English grammar, IT IS A
CORRUPTION! You see how stupid Osama Abdallah really is? When the ball is pointed against him, he
finds excuses to justify the Quran. Also what he says
is actually in contradiction to what his own God says. Compare:
O ye who believe! Truly, among your wives and your
children are (some that are) enemies to yourselves: so beware of
them! But if ye forgive and overlook, and cover up (their faults), verily
Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (The Noble Quran,
64:14)"
"All that they do is noted in (their) Books (of
Deeds). (The Noble Quran, 54:52)"
"The the people of Pharaoh
picked him up (from the river): (It was intended) that (Moses) should be
to them an adversary and a cause of sorrow: For Pharaoh and Haman and (all) their hosts were men of sin. (The
Noble Quran, 28:8)"
As we clearly see in the above examples, the addition of
the words in parenthesis is to help straighten the grammar of the sentence from
Arabic to English, or to help the reader know which person or object Allah
Almighty is referring to, or to clarify what the Noble Verse really means
because as I mentioned above, the Arabic grammar is quite different and
complex.
But the Quran
claims that it is clear, without any need for any of this here:
But if they turn away, thy duty is only to preach the
CLEAR Message. S. 16:82
Say:
"Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger. but if ye turn
away, he is only responsible for the duty placed on him and ye for that placed
on you. If ye obey him, ye shall be on right guidance. The Messenger's duty
is only to preach the CLEAR (Message). S. 24:54
These
are verses of the Book that makes (things) CLEAR. S. 26:2

are verses of the Qurán,-a book that makes

Osama Abdallah himself is guilty of using this very same Quranic verse by claiming that the Trinity isn’t found in
the Bible itself! So when it suits his position, Osama

There is nothing fascinating as to why
translators translate the Bible different ways in English. Their purpose is to
make sure that we understand it the best way we can. Different ways of
translating a verse doesn’t constitute a contradiction. In order for this to
ring true, Osama must show us what the original
meaning in Greek or Hebrew is suppose to be and then show us where the
translation deviated. Arguing contradictions without a
premises to base this claim on “begs the question”. Despite all of this,
various translations of the English bible have no affect on the Hebrew and
Greek OT and NT. What is embarrassing for Osama is
that Arabic scholars have found errors in the text of his own Arabic Quran:
