 J. R. Daniel Kirk

 Plenary Speaker

Daniel Kirk is associate professor of New Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary in Northern California. His passion is in articulating the big story of scripture, a commitment echoed in the title of his blog, Storied Theology (jrdkirk.com). There, Daniel has regularly engaged issues of gender equality in the church. His most recent book, Jesus Have I Loved, But Paul? uses the story of new creation in the resurrected Christ as a guide for making sense of the biblical story—including the crucial place of women in the church. He and his wife Laura helped lead a house church for four years in San Francisco, where they live with their two children. One of Daniel’s dreams is to help the church become a place where his now seven-year-old daughter is never told that she may not do something due to her gender.

Patriarchy and Worth: The Gospel’s Challenge to an Ancient System
Does the idea that men are given leadership over the home or church really mean that men are better? In the ancient world, there was simple answer to this question: Yes. The rule of men, “patriarchy,” was developed in a world where men were seen as superior in those things required for good leadership: gifting, competence, rationality, vision, and strength. We will see how this idea permeated the Roman world—even the Jewish world that the New Testament writers inhabited. The ancient context sheds light on numerous New Testament passages, and also reinforces the importance of looking to our equality in Christ and the gifting of the Spirit as the standards for determining someone’s fitness to lead in the church.
